Phase 1: Child Nutrition Education
The initiative began with a series of child nutrition tips presented by Registered Dietitian Kezia Phillip of Keys to Wellness.
Through practical guidance on healthy eating, balanced meals, and positive nutrition habits, families were encouraged to make informed food choices that support children’s healthy growth and development. The series reinforced the message that nourishing children today lays the foundation for healthier families and stronger communities tomorrow.
Phase 2: “Breast Is Best” Maternal Health Series
The second phase featured the “Breast Is Best” educational series, presented by District Nurses Portia Villafana-Briggs and Eirl Briggs.
The sessions provided expectant parents, new parents, and caregivers with valuable information about breastfeeding and maternal and infant health. The series also emphasized the importance of ensuring that mothers receive the information, encouragement, and practical support they need throughout their breastfeeding journeys, at home, within the community, and in the workplace.
Phase 3: Maternal and Child Care Hamper Initiative
The final phase provided care hampers and essential baby items to mothers and newborns at the Maternity and Children’s Wards of the Sangre Grande Hospital, as well as vulnerable families within the community.
This outreach was supported by Rotarians and Little Bright Eyes Daycare and Preschool. Beyond providing much-needed supplies, the initiative demonstrated care, compassion, and solidarity with mothers during one of the most important stages of their children’s lives.
Through these three phases, the Rotary Club of Sangre Grande combined education, maternal-health awareness, direct assistance, and community collaboration to promote healthier beginnings for mothers and children.
These initiatives reflected the Club’s commitment to building sustainable communities through service, youth leadership, and resilience. By investing in maternal well-being, child nutrition, and family support, the Club continues to help create a healthier and more hopeful future for the communities it serves.
