The renovation included eleven new toilets, ceiling repairs and the construction of a new septic tank. As the work progressed, additional needs at the school became apparent. Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota therefore also supported improvements to the lighting and provided additional fans to create a safer and more comfortable learning environment.
Rotary’s contribution was funded with proceeds from the 2025 Quota Men Cookout and the FOMO Party, two of the club’s fundraising events. The project demonstrates how the support of event attendees, sponsors and partners can be transformed into meaningful and lasting community impact.
School principal Mr. Fortune played an important role throughout the project. His commitment, perseverance and ability to bring different partners together helped expand the original sanitation project into a broader improvement of the school environment.
Following his requests, two local paint companies also contributed, making it possible to repaint the entire school building. Mr. Fortune started painting the school together with two of his own children. Soon volunteers further supported the project by contributing their time, effort, food and drinks during the renovation work.
Speaking on behalf of Rotary Club of Paramaribo Quota, Danitsja Willemsen praised Mr. Fortune’s enthusiasm and perseverance, noting that the project demonstrated what can be achieved when people and organisations join forces.
For the students and teachers at the R.D. Simons School annex, the handover represents more than the completion of a renovation project. It marks a new chapter in a safer, cleaner and more inspiring environment where students can learn, grow and prepare for their future. For the students this was also a learning curve of supporting each other in your community.
