Interpretation Services

Interpretation is a vague term with a meaning that can change depending on the context. So what does interpret mean? As a broad term, it defines a particular way in which we explain or understand something. This comes from a Latin word interpretati – “to explain, expound, or understand.”

However, the meaning that language service providers intend to deliver is quite different. It is closely connected to another Latin word, interpres – an agent or translator.

Interpreting is not just providing an explanation of the spoken content in a native language. Interpreting services are better viewed as the art of paraphrasing a subject matter into target languages. ISO precisely combines the way this word originated with a modern meaning to define interpreting.

So if we can provide a concise definition, interpretation can be defined as a way to deliver spoken or signed information from a source language to a target language. The interpreter has to convey both the register and meaning of the source language content.

What does an interpreter do?

Most interpreters demonstrate an amazing linguistic ability to communicate in foreign languages and tailor the speaker's speech to the target audience. Interpreters work either face-to-face or remotely and support the communication process in the public and private sectors.

The most common two modes of interpreting are simultaneous interpreting, which is done at the time of the exposure to the source language, and consecutive interpreting, which is done at breaks to this exposure.

When do you need interpretation services?

Interpreting is appealing in conferences, business meetings, and governmental sessions. You can also use it successfully in press conferences, educational meetings, and even church services. Introducing interpretation to any of these gatherings promotes inclusion and diversity among your audience. Considering the multilingualism among event attendees is important: hearing the speaker talk in multiple languages (including sign language) is the first step toward recognizing the cultural value of languages.

Professional interpreters work hard to deliver the message in virtually any context regardless of the differences in the subject matter.

What interpretation services does District 7030 provide?

As its primary service, the District 7030 Interpretation Team provides remote simultaneous interpretation services generally for English and French content only – English to French and/or French to English.

However, the same equivalent services are facilitated by District 7030 for the following languages if needed: Dutch, Papiamento and Spanish.

The majority, if not all, of the interpretation services provided by District 7030 Interpretation Team are provided remotely – where interpreters are connected via the internet to an online or in-person event and services are provided without the interpreter having to be physically present.

The District 7030 Interpretation Team only provides simultaneous interpretation services.

What do District 7030 interpretation services involve?

While the interpretation process itself is relatively simple and straightforward during an event, there are a few additional steps and criteria which need to be applied both before and after an event so as to ensure the best service is provided:

1. Prior to requesting interpretation services, it is always best to first ensure that information surrounding your event is validated and verified so as to ensure appropriate and adequate booking of interpreters based on availability and scheduling, as well as, appropriate preparation of interpreters based on the subject matter and content of your event.

2. District 7030 provides interpretation services for both District 7030-hosted events, as well as, non-District 7030 events where  hosted

3. The following information should be on-hand and included as part of the District 7030 Event Request form or the Interpretation Request form:

   • Full and proper name of event

   • Full description of event

   • Event Flyer(s)

   • Event date(s)

   • Event Start and End Times

   • Uni-directional (one-way or Bi-Directional (two-way) interpretation

   • Detailed event agenda with full names and proper titles of speakers, presenters, moderators, facilitators, etc. (no abbreviations or acronyms)

   • Bios/Intros of speakers/presenters to be read

   • All content to be shown on-screen (e.g. slide decks)

4. Once your request is submitted, along the the necessary information, you will then receive an email confirming the availability of interpretation services

5. Prior to submitting your request for interpretation services, you can always check with the District 7030 Interpretation Team to determine and verify what your interpretation needs are, as well as, how the Team can best meet your needs in a timely and cost-effective manner – where necessary the District 7030 Interpretation Team can provide you with guidance and suggestion.
    

How much does District 7030 translation services cost?

Interpretation services by the District 7030 Interpretation team are determined by the number of interpreters needed and duration of the event at a rate of US $50.00 per interpreter per hour

Once the requested interpretation services are for a district-hosted event, the cost of translation is bourne by the the district itself.

If an interpretation request comes from a non-District 7030 entity, the cost of translation will be passed to that entity and payment would need to be made to District 7030.
