 | What happens when you mix a little flour, a lot of laughter and eager young chefs with the spirit of service? You get battered up! On June 19th, 2026, the Rotaract Club of Penal brought its ‘Batter Up’ concept to fruition at the Haven of Hope in Woodland, Trinidad and Tobago. Though the exciting hands-on cooking and baking experience was the highlight of the visit! |
This project was designed to go far beyond simple food preparation. Our goal was to share practical life skills, build confidence, encourage teamwork and create meaningful connections through an activity the children could genuinely enjoy. Based on the flour-covered surfaces, tasty treats and laughter that rang throughout the visit, we would surely classify our mission as a success.
From the moment the cooking began, the children’s excitement brought the kitchen to life. They eagerly got involved, asked questions, helped with preparation and transformed simple ingredients into something they could be proud of. As we worked together to prepare a savoury chicken lasagna and a batch of chocolate chip cookies, the children’s enthusiasm reminded us that learning does not always have to happen in a classroom. Sometimes, valuable lessons are learnt while mixing, measuring, preparing food, sharing responsibilities and celebrating the final result together.
This project was made possible through the dedication of our volunteers and the generous support of those who contributed their time, ingredients, skills and encouragement. Like any hands-on initiative, ‘Batter Up’ required careful planning, coordination and teamwork to ensure that the experience was both enjoyable and meaningful. Though scheduling conflicts hindered the execution of the event the planning committee persevered. Through collaboration and a shared dedication to service, their efforts came together to create a memorable experience for both the children and volunteers.
By the end of the day, we left with full hearts, wonderful memories etched into our minds and an even stronger commitment to creating projects that are interactive, purposeful and centred on genuine human connections.
We look forward to hosting such projects in the upcoming Rotary year as we work together to create a lasting impact on our community of Penal and the world, at large.
