The Rotary Satellite Club of Saint Lucia Sunset started the new Rotary year with a bang. Within the first month of the year, the club completed a hand washing station project and in pressing ahead the club undertook its largest project to date at the Morne Du Don Primary, on the outskirts of the capital Castries.

The school is home to 245 students and twenty faculty, inclusive of ancillary staff. The project focused on one of Rotary's Areas of Focus - Water and Sanitation. The existing conditions of those washrooms were dilapidated and members were repulsed at the plight of the students of this school. The goal, therefore, was to remedy this situation and create a healthy space for the student body.

The project encompassed the rehabilitation of all of 4 washrooms, comprising 16 toilets stalls and face basins. The club also embarked on an upgrade of the school's kitchen, which is part of the state sponsored feeding program.

In order to undertake such a big project, the club needed to engage the community. However, due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19 pandemic, members had to be creative in their fundraising activities. As such the club devised a virtual fundraiser dubbed the "I Pledge" campaign, which kicked off in early August 2020.

A short video was created focusing on all areas for attention at the school with narration on the expected outcome and circulated to Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, public and private organizations and private individuals. Within one week, the club raised half the funds needed and the pledges continued rolling in. The club was able to meet its set goal to start the project during the third weekend in August.

Due to the resounding success of this campaign, the club decided to keep the campaign going to continue its work in the community and members from around District 7030 are invited to make a pledge today.

The project at the school lasted three weeks and was 100% completed for the new school year beginning on September 7,2020.

The principal and staff of the school were elated by the changes and upgrades which the club performed to enhance the school's facilities. The scope of this project included but was not limited to the following:
  1. Replacing 6 broken toilets
  2. Repairs to 8 existing toilets
  3. Installing 3 Urinals to augment the current stock
  4. Replacing a face basin and faucet
  5. Replacing 16 waste traps and tail pieces
  6. Replacing worn out plumbing fitting
  7. Installation of a water tank and water supply
  8. Painting of all the washrooms
  9. Updating the kitchen counter tops in concrete form from timber
  10. Retiling the countertops and flooring
