District Governor 7030 Rotarian Leslie Ramdhanny recently visited Trinidad and Tobago where he paid courtesy calls to Clubs in Trinidad & Tobago. During his visit, Clubs had the opportunity to showcase their current and upcoming projects to him mandated by Rotary International under the seven focus areas for the Rotary year 2022/23.
On his visit to the Rotary Club of Penal we had the distinct pleasure of having him pin the newly formed Interact Club of Barrackpore West Secondary School. This is the seventh Interact club sponsored and assisted by the Rotary Club of Penal. The Interact Club’s president Ms. Makeda Mc Leod highlighted the projects recently executed in the community as well as projects in the pipeline The Club was chartered on November 2022 under the guidance of Teacher Advisor Ms. Jamie Birbal. To commemorate the District Governor’s visit as well as the Rotary Club of Penal’s twentieth anniversary, trees were planted on the compound of the Barrackpore West Secondary School as well as Debe High Secondary School.
The next stop was at the Debe Indoor Sports Centre for viewing and participation in a Goalball exhibition match which was arranged by Mr. Lakhan of the Blind Welfare Association. Goalball is a game played by the visually impaired or vision impaired and is incorporated in an ongoing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) project of the Rotary Club of Penal in collaboration with Restore a Sense of I Can (RSC) and the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association (TTWBA). The game was invented to help rehabilitate veterans who had lost their sight during the Second World War. The object of the game is to throw the ball past the opponents and into the net to score points, players stay on their hands and knees to defend with three players at any one time each wearing an opaque eyeshade to ensure fair competition. Rotary International adopted in January 2019 the statement Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with the goal being to treat everyone with dignity and respect allowing everyone’s voice to be heard and providing equitable opportunities. The Club received a grant from the District for this DEI initiative.
On his visit to Trinidad, DG Ramdhanny also took the time to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) which was held on the weekend of the 14th and 15th January 2023. RYLA is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year thousands of young people are chosen to participate in this programme with their participation sponsored by Rotary Clubs. It takes the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and learning through practice. This year the Penal Club sponsored thirty-seven (37) students from our seven sponsored Interact Clubs.
Le Gouverneur du District 7030, le Rotarien Leslie Ramdhanny, s'est récemment rendu à Trinidad-et-Tobago où il a visité les clubs de Trinidad-et-Tobago. A cette occasion, les clubs ont pu lui présenter leurs actions en cours et à venir, préconisées par le Rotary International dans le cadre des sept axes stratégiques pour l'année rotarienne 2022/23.
Lors de sa visite au Rotary Club de Penal, nous avons eu l'immense plaisir de le voir épingler le tout nouveau club Interact de la Barrackpore West Secondary School. Il s'agit du septième club Interact parrainé et assisté par le Rotary Club de Penal. La présidente du club Interact, Mme Makeda Mc Leod, a souligné les projets récemment réalisés dans la communauté ainsi que les projets en cours de préparation. Le club a été créé en novembre 2022 sous la direction de l'enseignante conseillère, Mme Jamie Birbal. Pour commémorer la visite du Gouverneur du District et le vingtième anniversaire du Rotary club de Penal, des arbres ont été plantés dans l'enceinte de l'école secondaire Barrackpore West et de l'école secondaire Debe High.
Ils se sont ensuite rendus au centre sportif couvert de Debe pour assister et participer à un match d'exhibition de goalball organisé par M. Lakhan de la Blind Welfare Association. Le Goalball est un jeu pratiqué par les malvoyants ou les déficients visuels et est intégré dans une action Diversité, équité et inclusion (DEI) en cours du Rotary Club de Penal en collaboration avec « Restore a Sense of I Can » (RSC) et la « Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association » (TTWBA). Ce jeu a été inventé pour aider à la réhabilitation des anciens combattants qui avaient perdu la vue pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Le but du jeu est de lancer la balle à travers les adversaires et dans le filet pour marquer des points. Les joueurs restent à quatre pattes pour défendre avec trois joueurs en même temps, chacun portant un cache-œil opaque pour assurer une compétition équitable. En janvier 2019, le Rotary International a adopté la déclaration Diversité, Equité et Inclusion, dont l'objectif est de traiter chacun avec dignité et respect, de permettre à chacun de faire entendre sa voix et d'offrir des opportunités équitables. Le club a reçu une subvention du District pour cette initiative DEI.
Lors de sa visite à Trinidad, le DG Ramdhanny a également pris le temps d'assister au Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) qui s'est tenu le week-end du 14 et 15 janvier 2023. Le RYLA est un programme de leadership coordonné par les clubs Rotary du monde entier. Chaque année, des milliers de jeunes sont choisis pour prendre part à ce programme et leur participation est financée par les Rotary Clubs. Il prend la forme d'un séminaire, d'un camp ou d'un atelier pour discuter des compétences de leadership et de l'apprentissage par la pratique. Cette année, le Penal Club a parrainé trente-sept (37) étudiants de nos sept clubs Interact filleuls.
