The Rotary Clubs of Grenada provide an update on the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which passed over the islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique. The hurricane caused the destruction of 98% of buildings on these islands. On mainland Grenada, significant damage was reported in the northern regions, including loss of roofing and major destruction to the agricultural sector.
In Carriacou, the total population of 6,061, and 900 in Petit Martinique, have been significantly affected, with many seeking refuge in shelters. Sadly, nine deaths have been reported: eight in Carriacou and one in Grenada.
Carriacou has seen near-total destruction of its vegetation, mangroves, and marina. The electrical grid and communication systems have also suffered major damage. Currently, there is a supply of food, water, and tarpaulins to meet immediate needs. A temporary communication system is in place, and a major cleanup effort is underway. Vehicles, equipment, and fuel have been sent to aid in these efforts. The next phase focuses on reconstructing infrastructure and housing.
The urgent priority is ensuring a continuous supply of food, water, hygiene kits, first aid kits, and tarpaulins. The cleanup exercise must continue, alongside the repair of buildings. Fully restoring the communication system and the outside line plant, which carries communication cables and electrical lines, is crucial.
The L’Esterre Lauriston Development Committee, soon to be renamed Rotary Community Corps, will assist with Rotary’s efforts in Carriacou and Petit Martinique. The team comprises nine members, two of whom are former Rotarians.
