Alectryomancy, a form of divination involving chickens, was popular among ancient Etruscans looking to predict the future. They would place a chicken inside a circle of grain that had been divided into sections, each representing a letter of the alphabet. Whichever kernels the chicken ate first revealed answers to trained soothsayers.
This method might still suffice for simple questions like, “Will Tom Brady play until he’s 60?” or “Should I binge-watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians?” For matters of greater consequence, however, the dietary choices of poultry won’t do.
