RI President Holger Knaack Monthly Message

For years, Susanne and I hosted many Rotary Youth Exchange students in our home. This program was an entry point to Rotary for me, and my heart is truly in it. When Rotary’s exchange programs were suspended because of COVID-19 to keep students and families safe, we felt sorry, especially for the participants, because those years cannot be repeated.

Because of the many uncertainties of the pandemic, the Rotary Board has decided to suspend in-person exchanges through June 2022. As we look ahead with hope, we thank Youth Exchange officers, host families, and volunteers for their contributions in years past, and we encourage districts to offer virtual exchanges as a way of connecting students around the world with each other and with our communities.

For those who are not able to participate in Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary offers other opportunities. New Generations Service Exchange (NGSE) is a Rotary program that deserves wider recognition: It is an excellent opportunity for young people ages 18 to 30 to participate in community service as individuals or in a group and to gain internship experience. Simukai Matshalaga, a Rotaractor from Zimbabwe, stayed with us in Ratzeburg during her NGSE experience three years ago.

Our ability to meet in person is limited now, but we know that Rotary Opens Opportunities, always. Now is the time to get ready, so that when the pandemic is behind us, Rotary’s exchange programs will come back stronger than before, serving a world that is yearning to reconnect.

District Governor Lisle Chase Monthly Message

April was the month where we focused on Saving Mothers and Children and in May is Youth Service.  This year, we have been numbed by the loss of PDG Henri Guda and PDG Herve Honoré in March and burials by coincidence on April 8th.  Tributes, far more eloquently worded than I could ever write, have been posted on our website and on social media, therefore I will not repeat here.  Suffice it to say that it takes great emotional effort for so many of us to deal with the loss.  As family, we came together at this very sad moment, to embrace each other – virtually, and to mourn together.  We are united across all 17 countries/territories and that is our greatest strength.

It was great that so many turned out for this virtual conference with our highest numbers recorded over 650 participants.  This year, more than ever before, we need to support each other and to be a part of the District, the family.  I thank all those of you who attended and urge those who missed it to view the conference sessions via the District 7030 YouTube channel.

Rotary Without Borders

The 2020-2021 Rotary year will be remembered for many things...and Rotarians across the region still on a high after last month's inaugural virtual District Conference hosted in Saint Lucia. There was no doubt that the year 2020-2021 was fraught with global upheaval. Throughout the District Conference however, speaker after speaker continued to acknowledge the opportunity that the world faces at this time. District Governor Lisle Chase, when he took the podium, was electric. “Though the tempest rage about”, he said, “Rotary stands. It is grounded on the rocks of friendliness, tolerance and usefulness. Despite not being able to fellowship, despite the volcano in St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Rotary stands.”

Did You Know...

  • WHEN IS THE YEAR-END DEADLINE FOR MAKING A FOUNDATION GIFT? Our Rotary year is almost over, but the continuing mission of The Rotary Foundation never ends. The programs of the Rotary Foundation are for present and future needs –educational programs, medical assistance programs, community assistance and development programs, and various self-help programs –all to improve the lives of the people of the world. Every year, 30 June is the deadline for contributions to count toward a club’s final giving amount for that Rotary year. Club members are encouraged to make their year-end gifts as early as possible in order to ensure that their gift is processed on time. Remember, every contribution that is made to Annual Fund-SHARE by 30 June this year will result in more grant funding for your club and district three years from now. Make your year-end contributions today to ensure that your club can make a difference in the world tomorrow!.
