Welcome

 
The impact of climate change is visible everywhere we look –from prolonged periods of drought and heightened activity during hurricane season, to rising sea levels, the scourge of sargassum, and the bleaching of our coral reefs. Meanwhile, our continued reliance on single-use plastics and Styrofoam, coupled with a lack of large-scale recycling options within the region, have resulted in overflowing landfill sites, and a plethora of waste materials entering our oceans, adversely impacting our ecosystems.

In light of this, in a landmark decision at the end of June, the Rotary Foundation Trustees and Rotary International Board of Directors unanimously approved the addition of a new area of focus: supporting the environment. Shortly before the decision was announced, District Governor Lisle Chase took the decision to create an Environmental Sustainability committee, tasked with assessing current efforts taking place within the district, supporting clubs in the introduction of initiatives designed to protect our environment, and the application for grant funding, and coordinating district-wide events to raise the awareness of environmental concerns.
 
As Chair of the committee, I would like to start the year by introducing myself and the team. I am a member of DG Lisle’s home club of Gros Islet in Saint Lucia. I am joined by Mario Bento of the Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown, Lisa Foster of Georgetown, Guyana, Keiron Nanan of Chaguanas, Trinidad, Sean Paddy of POS, Trinidad and Hance Thompson of Demerara, Guyana. Our Rotaract family is represented by President Darren Sarijoen of F. R.E.S.H. in Suriname.
 
We invite Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors that are already involved in, or seek to launch sustainability projects, or simply have a passion for the environment, to reach out and join us in pursuing the committee’s objectives, whether by joining the committee, or simply helping us communicate with the member countries of the district. We also encourage Rotarians to join the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (https://www.esrag.org) and Rotaractors and Interactors to join the Climate Solutions Coalition (http://climate-solutions-coalition.org).
 
We are in the process of developing a section of the district website to showcase environmental projects, and later this month, we will be circulating a survey to gather information from the district, and help us shape plans for one or more district-wide projects, and we encourage all clubs to share their feedback. À la lumière de cela, dans une décision historique à la fin du mois de juin, les administrateurs de la Fondation Rotary et le conseil d'administration du Rotary International ont approuvé à l'unanimité l'ajout d'un nouveau domaine
d'intérêt: le soutien à l'environnement. Peu de temps avant l'annonce de la décision, Le gouverneur de district Lisle Chase a pris la décision de créer un comité de durabilité de l'environnement, chargé d'évaluer les efforts actuels
en cours dans le district, de soutenir les clubs dans l'introduction d'initiatives conçues pour protéger notre environnement, et la demande de subvention, et de coordonner les événements à l'échelle du district. sensibiliser aux
préoccupations environnementales.

En tant que président du comité, j'aimerais commencer l'année en me présentant moi-même et l'équipe. Je suis membre du club local de la DG Lisle de Gros Islet à Sainte-Lucie.
