We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors…We borrow it from our children…

The Rotary Club of Maracas/St. Joseph has established a BEVERAGE CONTAINER RECYCLING PROGRAM in three primary schools in the district.  The program which was launched in April of 2015 will soon reach its first anniversary with resounding success and enthusiasm.

The initiative was borne from collaboration with the Solid Waste Management Company Limited, SWMCOL, to execute a pilot program in the district and collect feedback on the community’s compliance and enthusiasm toward recycling plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans and tetrapaks.

Of note, the recycling of beverage containers, particularly plastic bottles, is seen as a major step in reducing flooding due to obstructed waterways in our local community.

Bins were donated and prepared by Rotary through Club members networking with local businesses.

Educational sessions were held at each school and monitoring was done by SWMCOL and Rotary.

The participating schools, Maracas Presbyterian, Maracas  RC  and Maracas SDA showed an impressive 100% compliance with sorting of garbage and bin utilization.

We are proud of the students and staff and look forward to the long term nurturing and support for the future keepers of the earth.
