The Rotary Club of Demerara under President Renata Chuck-A-Sang this year joined the campaign to end gender-based violence in Guyana. Domestic violence within the communities of Guyana has increased over the years, with statistics from the Guyana Police Force showing that domestic violence has also contributed to increases in overall national death tolls. The campaign focused on creating advocacy messages against domestic violence targeting both women and children, as well as, sharing with them that help can be accessed and directing them to where help can be accessed.

The campaign was delivered in two phases: the first phase included bus stop signs and the second phased presented billboards with same messages in the areas most affected.

This project was made possible through the support of Help & Shelter - a non-governmental organization that supports women and children who are abused through the process of making a criminal report, finding housing, counseling, re-establishing themselves, etc. This NGO has been in existence for over twenty years.

It was also in honor of the work that Help & Shelter does that Ms. Denise Dias the founder and chair of the organization was recognized and honored for her significant contribution to Guyana through her vocational service contribution. She was awarded the 2016 Vocational Award of the Rotary Club of Demerara. Ms Denise Dias has demonstrated commitment, dedication and exemplary leadership exemplifies the Rotary motto ‘Service Above Self’.

The private sector community provided the needed financial support for the production of the advocacy messages. Big thank you to Ansa McAl, Beharry Group of Companies, Besson Windows, Sentinel and Hand-In-Hand Company Ltd.
