St. John’s Antigua, February 21, 2017 – The Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown (RCAS), Rotary Club of Antigua (RCA) and Rotaract Club of Antigua recently marked 112 years of the founding of Rotary and celebrated World Peace & Understanding Day at a church service at the Spring Gardens Moravian Church.

RCAS President, Herald Rolland spoke on behalf of the clubs at the service and thanked Reverend Denise Smith-Lewis-Manse and the members of the church for their warm welcome.

“Peace and understanding are such important ideals of Rotary that there are even Rotary Centres for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution”, said RCAS President, Herald Rolland.

“Here in Antigua, we as Rotarians are helping to facilitate peace through our many service projects which benefits our community and the world.”

The celebrations continued with a fellowship brunch with members. Assistant Governor Corina Edwards-Sealy was in attendance at the event and spoke briefly on the relevance of peace and understanding in today’s world.

“Peace and Understanding; these two words could not be more relevant today – And as we fellowship we should reflect on how fortunate we are and appreciate some of life’s simple pleasures, many of which we take for granted”, said AG Corina Edwards-Sealy.

“The Caribbean could not be more representative and harmonious of creed, race and color. Let us continue to teach our children tolerance and understanding; they are our future.”

Founded in Chicago in 1905, Rotary and its ideals of community service and volunteerism quickly spread around the world. By its 25th anniversary, Rotary had more than 150,000 members in 3,349 clubs in 62 countries on six continents.

Today Rotary’s 1.2 million members incorporate technology, progressive membership strategies and hands-on projects to make their volunteer efforts more effective, while maintaining a century-long commitment to excellence in community service.
